Political Parties in 16th General Election

  • Total 464 Political Parties Participated in the 16th General Elections out of which 6 national parties, 39 state parties and 419 unrecognized parties.
  • In the 2009 General Elections, 363 parties participated; comprising 7 national parties, 34 state parties and 322 unrecognized parties.

Total 43 Delegates from 18 Countries Witness Lok Sabha Elections 2014

  • The Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius and the UNDP Resident Representative visited a Counting Centre here today as part of the Election Visitors Programme.
  • Other countries which participated in the 16th Lok Sabha Election 2014 are Namibia, Nigeria, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Uganda, Kenya, Bhutan and several member-countries of the League of Arab States (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Somalia, Palestine, Iraq, Yemen and Oman).

Highest number of Women in 16th Lok Sabha

  • The 16th Lok Sabha has the highest number of women members i.e. 61, compared to 59 Women members in 2009.
  • In the 2014 Elections, 8251 candidates contested the elections, out of which 668 were women and 7,578 were men. 5 Transgenders also contested the polls this Elections.
  • The winning percentage of women in the 16th General Elections is 9.13% while that of Men’s is 6.36%.The Average number of contestants per seat is 15.2 in 2014.

Voter turnout and number of Candidates and Electors

  • A total 8251 candidates contested in the General Elections 2014for which Election Commission set up 9,19,452 polling stations.
  • The National average of voter turnout is 66.4%, Nagaland being the leading state with 87.82%.
  • Dhubri of Assam was the parliamentary constituency that recorded the highest turnout at 88.22%
  • Nagaland at 87.82%; Srinagar of J&K recorded the lowest turnout at 25.90%, followed by Anantnag of the same state.

Lowest Ever Number of Independent Candidates Elected

  • There was the lowest ever number of Independent candidates in the General Election getting elected. Out of a total of 8251 contestants, 3234 were Independent candidates; out of this, 3 candidates have been elected.
  • In the previous General Elections held in 2009, the total number of Independent candidates was 3831 out of which 9 were elected.
  • The highest ever number of Independents elected is 42 (Second General Elections, 1957); the number of Independent candidates contested was highest at 10635 in 11th General Elections, held in 1996. (Source ECI)
