Commonwealth Games 2014 Updates – Points to Remember

• The 2014 Commonwealth Games were organised in Glasgow, Scotland.
• The final part of the Queen’s Baton Relay was passed to Sir Chris Hoy who delivered it to the Queen at the glittering opening ceremony.
• The thistle man named ‘Clyde’ was the official mascot of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
• ‘Clyde’ is the symbol of the youthful energy embodied by a cheeky facial expression and strong, sporty thistle arms and legs.
• It is the first time the official mascot has not been an animal.
• The Games were participated by 4950 athletes from 71 countries and territories in 18 sports over 11 days.
• India’s star shooter and silver medallist at London Olympics Vijay Kumar was the flag-bearer of the Indian team.
• India sent about 224 players to take part in the games.
• England’s Jodie Stimpson won the opening gold of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

• Canadian gymnast Franki Jones was honoured with the coveted David Dixon Award for the best athlete of the XX Commonwealth Games.
• She claimed 6 medals including 1 gold in the rhythmic gymnastics events.

India got 05th place with 15 golds and 30 silvers and secured total 64 medals in this Commonwealth Games. India’s performance at Glasgow could not touch the mark of its performance at the Commonwealth 2010 in New Delhi where it got 2nd position in the medals tally with total 101 medals including 38 golds and 27 silvers.

FIFA 2014 Updates – Points to Remember
• Germany reached the FIFA World Cup final, beating Brazil.
• Germany became the world football champion for the 4th time with the help of the goal of Mario Goetze in extra time.
• Argentina’s Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball award for ‘Best Player of FIFA World Cup, 2014.
• James Rodriguez of Colombia won the coveted Golden Boot award for scoring highest individual goals in this World Cup. He scored six goals in Brazil.
German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer got the Golden Glove honour.
• Young player of the tournament award went to Paul Pogba of France.
Colombia was decorated with the Fair Play award
• Germany’s star striker Miroslav Klose became the FIFA World Cup’s all-time record scorer with his 16th goal in the world cup semi-final against Brazil.
